CommentsHi, I'm from So Bo or Slo Bo...anyway..i don't know you personally but i know of you. I've lived here all my live and i LOVE it here. I know it's not as exciting as CA...of course there's more to do there, but I love the small town. I respect your decision for never moving back here, but you just make it sound soooo terrible, when actually it's not. There are some great people that live here. We've been thinking about maybe moving to Richmond ourselves (hubby's family lives there),but I don't wanna move. This is the first time I've been your site. My sis-in-law knows you guys and visits all the time so thought I'd take a look. Pretty cool, but just wondering why you don't want to move back...tho it's none of my bbusiness...just curious.
Response From JP:
Hi droberts! Thanks for stopping by and taking the time
to sign the guestbook.
Before I answer your question
as to why I will never move back to SoBo, let me first say
that I have fond memories of growing up in such a small town
before the onset of cell phones, the internet and 24-hour
news. It was a time when South Boston still had some life in
it and kids would actually go outdoors to ride bikes or play
football or hide and go seek or whatever. It was a time
where when two kids had a disagreement, they may have gotten
in a fight, but no one could ever conceive that one might
shoot the other. It was time when on a warm summer night,
every kid with a driver's license hopped in his/her car and
went into town to be seen and hang out with all the other kids
instead of sitting at home and chatting on the computer.
I too know a lot of GREAT
people that live in South Boston. My best friend still lives
in South Boston as do my parents, my future in-laws,
and lots of other great people whom I consider my friends.
Just cause I have no desire to move back to South Boston
doesn't mean I think any less of those who choose to stay.
I just remember a South
Boston that had a pulse and whenever I visit these days I
don't see that anymore. Actually, that was happening before
I moved to California and it just seems to get worse each
year when I visit. I guess I need more in my life than just
work, Wal-Mart, and church cause those seem to be the only
things to do in South Boston these days...from what I can see.
First, there are no real
clubs in South Boston because certain people don't know how
to act in public which ruins it for everyone else. Case in
point: Steve's used to be THE place to be and was always
filled with young, fun loving people looking for a good
time. Over the years, that changed as different elements
starting showing up and again, ruining it for everyone. All
of a sudden, you had all these brawls breaking out and who would
ever have thought you'd have people shooting at each other in the
Best Western parking lot? That's why South Boston will never
again be able to have a real club where people can go
dancing or just to hang out and have a good time. Bars
can't exactly have an "intelligent and civil people only"
admissions policy, you know?
Second, there aren't enough
job opportunities in SoBo and at least from all my experiences,
employers in South Boston don't really value their employees
like they do here in California. Companies here reward good
employees with higher pay, better benefits, and promotions
for being a good employee. I never experienced that in my
all years working in South Boston. In fact, I was fired from
my last job in South Boston because I had the silly notion
that being the webmaster, pc repair tech, and tech support
for a "local ISP" meant I should make more than the
secretary who answered the phones. What was I thinking? I
actually don't have any regrets about that because it was
the best thing that ever happened to me. It led me to
California and eventually to start my own company and I
will never again have to answer to anyone else or work my
ass off to make money for anyone other than myself. Maybe I
should send my former SoBo boss a gift basket. Ha!
Third, there just isn't any
art or culture in South Boston. Here, we can go see plays or art
museums or have a nice dinner in a swanky restaurant while a
jazz band plays in the background. There are book
clubs, photo clubs, dog parks, festivals and street fairs,
parties on the beach, bike trails, and more stores and
restaurants than you could ever possibly visit. In other
words, you can never be bored out here. There's always
something to do here and you never have to worry about
undesirable elements messing it up...at least not where we
live.
Finally, it's all the little
things that make such a huge difference:
- You can be yourself here. No one judges you for what
you believe, what you wear or have, who your parents are, how much money you
make, whether or not you were in church on Sunday
morning, etc, etc. Everyone here just gets along cause
life is too short to play silly social games.
- You can buy liquor in the grocery store. You don't
have to go to some special store to buy liquor like some
outcast.
- Cops aren't hovering like vultures out here trying
to give you a ticket for every little thing. They're
after the real criminals, not everyone going 5 miles
over the speed limit.
- No rumor mill...because there's so many people and
so much to do out here, everyone isn't running around
gossiping about everyone else or what they're doing.
They're not
spreading lies or making innuendos.
- Worker's rights. California looks out for the rights
of workers, not the other way around like Virginia.
- You aren't required to have those silly county and
inspection stickers in your front windshield of your
vehicle...that's
such a racket.
- Here, you can have a pizza and a six pack delivered to
your door.
- The weather here is awesome!
Response From KW:
Ditto! So Bo ain't what it used to be. Times,
places, and people have changed over the years. Nothing will
ever be as it used to be.
I agree w/everything he's said, but I miss my
family and friends tremendously and seeing them only once a
year is definitely not enough. I can hardly wait to move
back to the east coast. Of course, I don't look forward to
the bugs, the cold, or the humidity, but I'm willing to
trade the positives of CA for the negatives of VA. I miss
you all and love you so much! And don't let Jimmy fool
you...he may mean what he said above, but he feels the same
way as I do about family and friends.....and moving back to
VA.
