Happy Birthday Chad | CONGRATS Chad & Sara
Posted by Jimmy :: Sunday, October 3rd, 2005 :: 12:57 PM PST :: Comment On This Post

Happy Birthday wishes going out to our good friend Chad Lloyd today but more importantly...CONGRATS to Chad & Sara on the birth of their baby girl today. What are the odds of that? The baby was one month early but mother and daughter are doing fine from what I understand. She weighted 6.1lbs but no word on a name yet. I'll keep you posted as I find out more.

Update: It's a girl and her name is Maya Jean Lloyd

Update II: Just spoke with Chad and mother and daughter are doing fine and he expects they'll both be coming home sometime Wednesday afternoon and he plans to send a picture by the end of the week.

Weekend Update
Posted by Jimmy :: Sunday, October 2nd, 2005 :: 11:43 PM PST :: Comment On This Post

We actually didn't do anything over the weekend except relax and take it easy. I spent so much of last weekend photographing a car show and a lobster festival that it was good to just sit at home and do nothing. My neck and shoulders have been killing me as of late cause I spend so many hours hunched over the pc that I decided not to spend more than an hour at my pc on Saturday which was nice for a change. Me and Kim just crashed on the sofa and watched TV until dinner time at which point I grilled some roasted garlic chicken along with scalloped potatoes and corn. I've become quite the chef over the past few weeks and fixed dinner for Kim every night last week. We didn't even order any pizza!

Saturday night we watched Monster In Law which was extremely funny along with the new season of SNL which was ok. I also watched Crash which was really good although not an accurate depiction of life in Los Angeles...at least from what I've seen.

Sunday we did more of the same...nothing but lounging around watching TV so we should be pretty well rested at this point. I'm probably gonna need it, I've only got about 20 sites in progress right now with about 3 or 4 more starting this week. So much for cutting back on web design to pursue photography!

Fun With Photoshop
Posted by Jimmy :: Sunday, October 2nd, 2005 :: 9:25 PM PST :: Comment On This Post

One of the fun things about Photoshop is that you can make some pretty cool composites from your photographs. I combined one of my nighttime shots of the Redondo Beach Pier with another photo of the moon to create this surrealistic shot. I've got a couple of different creations like this in mind and may even have them printed on canvas for greater effect.

Where There's Smoke . . .
Posted by Jimmy :: Sunday, October 2nd, 2005 :: 9:01 PM PST :: Comment On This Post

A lot of neighborhoods on the northern side of Los Angeles were on fire last week as wildfires swept thru the foothills. A long, dark trail of smoke could be seen blowing out over the ocean which actually made for a pretty scene in spite of the destruction it was causing. Luckily, we don't live close enough to any foothills to worry about fires or mudslides.

The Final Katrina Post
Posted by Jimmy :: Thursday, Sept. 28th, 2005 :: 11:10 PM PST :: Comment On This Post

I'm way past the whole Katrina/New Orleans thing but someone emailed this today and I couldn't resist putting the issue to rest by posting this article from Jesse Lee Peterson...a black conservative who's like the anti Jesse Jackson. His article clearly proves that not all black Americans hold the President responsible and addresses who is really to blame for the chaos that ensued in the aftermath of Katrina. Keep in mind that the article below was written by Jesse Lee Peterson, NOT me!

Moral poverty cost blacks in New Orleans

Say a hurricane is about to destroy the city you live in. Two questions:
  • What would you do?
  • What would you do if you were black?

Sadly, the two questions don't have the same answer.

To the first: Most of us would take our families out of that city quickly to protect them from danger. Then, able-bodied men would return to help others in need, as wives and others cared for children, elderly, infirm and the like.

For better or worse, Hurricane Katrina has told us the answer to the second question. If you're black and a hurricane is about to destroy your city, then you'll probably wait for the government to save you.

This was not always the case. Prior to 40 years ago, such a pathetic performance by the black community in a time of crisis would have been inconceivable. The first response would have come from black men. They would take care of their families, bring them to safety, and then help the rest of the community. Then local government would come in.

No longer. When 75 percent of New Orleans residents had left the city, it was primarily immoral, welfare-pampered blacks that stayed behind and waited for the government to bail them out. This, as we know, did not turn out good results.

Enter Jesse Jackson and Louis Farrakhan. Jackson and Farrakhan laid blame on "racist" President Bush. Farrakhan actually proposed the idea that the government blew up a levee so as to kill blacks and save whites. The two demanded massive governmental spending to rebuild New Orleans, above and beyond the federal government's proposed $60 billion. Not only that, these two were positioning themselves as the gatekeepers to supervise the dispersion of funds. Perfect: Two of the most dishonest elite blacks in America, "overseeing" billions of dollars. I wonder where that money will end up.

Of course, if these two were really serious about laying blame on government, they should blame the local one. Responsibility to perform – legally and practically – fell first on the mayor of New Orleans. We are now all familiar with Mayor Ray Nagin – the black Democrat who likes to yell at President Bush for failing to do Nagin's job. The facts, unfortunately, do not support Nagin's wailing. As the Washington Times puts it, "recent reports show [Nagin] failed to follow through on his own city's emergency-response plan, which acknowledged that thousands of the city's poorest residents would have no way to evacuate the city."

One wonders how there was "no way" for these people to evacuate the city. We have photographic evidence telling us otherwise. You've probably seen it by now – the photo showing 2,000 parked school buses, unused and underwater. How much planning does it require to put people on a bus and leave town, Mayor Nagin?

Instead of doing the obvious, Mayor Nagin (with no positive contribution from Democratic Gov. Kathleen Blanco, the other major leader vested with responsibility to address the hurricane disaster) loaded remaining New Orleans residents into the Superdome and the city's convention center. We know how that plan turned out.

About five years ago, in a debate before the National Association of Black Journalists, I stated that if whites were to just leave the United States and let blacks run the country, they would turn America into a ghetto within 10 years. The audience, shall we say, disagreed with me strongly. Now I have to disagree with me. I gave blacks too much credit. It took a mere three days for blacks to turn the Superdome and the convention center into ghettos, rampant with theft, rape and murder.

President Bush is not to blame for the rampant immorality of blacks. Had New Orleans' black community taken action, most would have been out of harm's way. But most were too lazy, immoral and trifling to do anything productive for themselves.

All Americans must tell blacks this truth. It was blacks' moral poverty – not their material poverty – that cost them dearly in New Orleans. Farrakhan, Jackson, and other race hustlers are to be repudiated – they will only perpetuate this problem by stirring up hatred and applauding moral corruption. New Orleans, to the extent it is to be rebuilt, should be remade into a dependency-free, morally strong city where corruption is opposed and success is applauded. Blacks are obligated to help themselves and not depend on the government to care for them. We are all obligated to tell them so.

First Ever Giant Squid Captured On Film
Posted by Kim: Tuesday, September 27th, 2005 :: 8:01 PM PST :: Comment On This Post

Being a big science geek and having seen a dozen shows on Architeuthis (Greek for chief squid) even I was beginning to wonder if the world would ever see a real live giant squid. It finally happened today when scientists in Japan captured this 25 foot giant squid on camera as they (ironically) used a smaller squid as bait. This one is only about half grown as scientists have found dead specimens as large as 60 feet. Kind of cool to know that there are still a few "monsters" left in the world.

Random Thoughts

  • How come these commercials on TV say they can feed a kid in Africa for a dollar a day but every week when I buy groceries it's like $200?

  • As much as I hate buying anything from terrorist run Seven Elevens, you know it's time to leave when someone walks in a tells the clerk, "Dude, you gotta help me!" Luckily I was on my way out the door at the time.

  • Why do vegetarians consider eating meat ethically wrong? How do they explain the fact that we have incisors?

  • Did you know that Manta Rays like to leap out of the ocean much in the same way as dolphins and sharks? Click here to see some pretty amazing pics of them in flight.

Work Never Ends
Posted by Jimmy: Sunday, September 25th, 2005 :: 9:32 PM PST :: Comment On This Post

I'm trying to remember the last time I took a full day off...whenever it was, it wasn't this weekend. I volunteered to work the beer booth at the Lobster Festival on Friday and then had to photograph the event on Saturday. Sunday I had to photograph an historic car show at the Redondo Pier and then spent the rest of the day cleaning and washing clothes. I also bought groceries, updated my website and completed a few print orders for several clients.

Man do I need a vacation!

Dinner & A Movie
Posted by Jimmy: Sunday, September 25th, 2005 :: 9:22 PM PST :: Comment On This Post

It'd been a while since we did the whole dinner and a movie routine so we headed to one our favorite restaurants Saturday night (South Bay Grill) and enjoyed a wonderful seafood dinner. Kim had the caramel glazed salmon while I had the crab alfredo. After dinner we headed to Best Buy to kill some time since our movie didn't start for another two hours and finally headed to the theatre to see Tim Burton's Corpse Bride. All in all I'd say it was a good movie. It was a little heavy on the musicals and didn't have enough laughs but still a good movie. It actually reminded me of all those Christmas animation specials from back in the day.

Weird Combination

Sometimes you never know what you'll see when you leave the house. We saw this tiny little car and right after we snapped the photo, this fairly tall guy got something out of "the back" so it was obviously his car. Or maybe he just looks tall standing next to this car. At least he's not overcompensating. :^P

Thong Gone Wrong
Posted by Jimmy: Sunday, September 25th, 2005 :: 9:02 PM PST :: Comment On This Post

It's bad enough when you see fat girls wearing low rise jeans and a thong but this takes the cake. At least when I wear Kim's thongs I know how to put them on correctly! :^P
